The main business in this area then was agriculture and then it was sand and gravel industries where some are still in operation to this day.
Qualcomm Stadium (formerly the Murphy Stadium) on Friars Road has been a fixture in the valley since 1967, when it was built. It has been home to both the San Diego Charges and the San Diego Padres until Petco Park was built for the Padres. Currently, along with the San Diego Charges, the stadium as well as its vast parking lot is also utilized for concerts, car shows and many other events throughout the year.
To the west of the stadium, a new shopping center has just been completed and houses, along with small specialty shops and restaurants, are IKEA, Costco and Lowe’s.
Until recently, Mission Valley has been dominated by commercial establishments. The Mission Valley Mall and the Fashion Valley Mall are two of the largest shopping centers in the valley surrounded by smaller ones. There are also numerous hotels, car dealers, restaurants and specialty shops.
Recently Mission Valley real estate has changed as a number of condominiums and apartments have been built in Mission Valley making it a strong residential area as well.
The latest residential development was completed in 2005 featuring Escala in Mission Valley – an upscale gated community with over 760 luxury condos and Portofino a 670-appartment complex. Currently an even largest development "Civita" is underway featuring 4870 residential units and nearly a million square feet of commercial and office space. The units will include single family homes, condos, townhomes, apartments and penthouses.
