About Hillcrest, San Diego
Lifestyle
As you enter Hillcrest from University Avenue, the first thing you will notice is the restored Hillcrest sign which is one of the many fixtures that gives this community a unique character. It is one of the oldest communities in San Diego and the streets are lined up with elegant restaurants offering ethnic specialties, antique shops, bookstores, boutiques, galleries, coffee shops and many more.
Hillcrest is also the center of San Diego’s gay and lesbian community and the host of the annual Gay Pride parade and other events. The nightlife in Hillcrest comes to life and is very alive with sleek nightclubs, concerts, live bands, upscale dining and late night snacks or coffee at sidewalk cafes.
A few minutes drive to the north off of Interstate 163 are the upscale Fashion Valley Mall and the Mission Valley Mall where you can find everything from upper end department stores, outlet stores to varieties of eateries and restaurants.
Balboa Park is just a short distance south of Hillcrest and everything else such as grocery stores and specialty food stores are walking distance from whichever area you are located in this community. It is a prime area to live in for those who like the “small village” atmosphere but love the hustle and bustle of a big city.
