San Ysidro located at the California and Tijuana border, is the southern most neighborhood of the City of San Diego. The area is the gateway between Mexico and the U.S. and the busiest international crossing in the world. I-5 and I-805 merge in this area and the San Diego Trolley transports people from the border to downtown.
The area became part of the City in 1957, but maintains its village and agricultural environment. It is a multi-cultural community with some neighborhoods of well-tended older homes as well as newer urban neighborhoods.
Commercial activity takes place along San Ysidro Boulevard and in the new Las Americas Center. San Ysidro is also home to the San Diego Factory Outlet Center, with more than 20 discount stores for famous-name products. Population is about 4,700.
While the freeways and trolley give the area good transportation options, they also fragment the neighborhoods. The busy border crossing causes congestion and other problems in the area. The City of San Diego and Tijuana are exploring other options and possibly another border crossing.
Passes and special lanes have been established for frequent border crossers. It is also possible to park in San Ysidro and walk across the border for a meal and some shopping.
