National City, incorporated in 1887, is the second oldest city in San Diego County. Located south of the City of San Diego and 10 miles north of the Mexican border, National City thrives on its climate, its proximity to the Port of San Diego and its position as a gateway to Mexico.
The history of the area begins with the California Indians and the missions. After the Indians, the land belonged to Mission San Diego de Alcala, but was taken over by the soldiers of the Presidio as grazing land for their horses. The soldiers called the area El Rancho del Rey, the Ranch of the king. California governor, Pio Pico eventually gave the land to his brother-in-law, Don Juan Forester who called it El Rancho de la Nacion.
However, modern day National City begins with the Kimball brothers, Warren, Levi, Frank and George, who purchased the land in 1868. Frank Kimball built a house there that boasted of being the first modern house in San Diego. It had a bath tub and hot running water. He named the new town he was building National City.
Some of the first ventures in the area were silk worm farms. They didn’t prosper, but the silk worms lived on in the area feeding on native brush for a number of years. The first wharf reaching into the deep channel was built in 1871. The Kimball’s struggled for a number of years to connect National City to east by railroad, never quite succeeding, although a number of companies did lay track in the area.
The National City Record was founded in 1882 and is one of the antecedents of the San Diego Daily Transcript. Its successor was the National City News.
National City was advertised on the East Coast as having the best climate on earth. Residents flocked out to avoid the cold winters and built miles of tree shaded streets and Victorian homes, many of which remain. Four buildings in the city are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Granger Music Hall, Brick Row on Heritage Square, St. Matthews Episcopal Church and the Santa Fe Rail Depot have all been
restored to their past glory.
