Besides from main attraction of the ideal all year long climate and the beaches, Del Mar is also well-known for the world-class thoroughbred racing track the Del Mar Race Track. It was sponsored and built in 1937 by Bing Crosby, Paramount Studios and Pat O’Brien.
It was made famous by racehorse aficionados from Hollywood in the likes of Jimmy Durante, Desi Arnaz and many more. In fact, the race track is located on Jimmy Durante Boulevard right off Interstate 5. It is a 43-day racing event held from the end of July through mid-September and brings in enthusiasts from all over the world. Another event that is held annually at the Del Mar Fairgrounds and brings in the locals as well as visitors from all over, is the San Diego County Fair (formerly known as the Del Mar Fair). It is the fifth largest fair in North America and it runs every year from the second week of June and ends on July 4. The fair offers fun exhibits, concerts of well-known artists, contests, attractions and food in so many varieties.
Del Mar is truly a gem and a delightful upscale residential community with a long and very interesting history.
