Logan Heights - Barrio LoganLogan Heights – Barrio Logan, located in southeast San Diego Central, was settled in the late 1800s. Its population increased in the early 1900s as Mexican citizens immigrated to the area to escape the Mexican revolution and Mexico’s poor economy. At one point the area was the second largest Mexican-American community on the West Coast with a population of about 20,000.

The community prospered during World War II with the increased jobs available to the residents in the San Diego shipyards and defense industries. However, after the war, the zoning in the area changed to industrial bringing junk yards and other businesses. Interstate 5 bisected the Barrio in 1963 and the Coronado Bay Bridge’s pylons and on ramps caused more dislocation in 1969. The population of the area declined to around 5,000 during these construction projects.

Real estate in Logan Heights began to revive as the heart of the San Diego Latino community with its effort to establish Chicano Park under the bridge pylons. It took several years of struggle and an occupation of the site by demonstrators, but by 1970 the park land was secured and Chicano People’s Park was a reality.

In 1973, the murals that distinguish the park were started by a group of Chicano artists who saw that art could transform the gray space under the bridge into a lively, colorful tribute to their heritage. The Chicano Park Murals are now a San Diego Historical Site and are internationally known for their artistic value. The artists include Victor Ochoa, Mario Torero, Yolanda Lopez, Jose Montoya, Sal Barajas, Juanishi Orozco, Berenice Badillo, Carmen Kalo and many others. The murals chronicle the social, political and cultural issues of San Diego’s Mexican-Americans.

Logan Heights – Barrio Logan is tight-knit and is gradually rebuilding itself into a vibrant community with mixed-use real estate projects and affordable housing. The area was designated a redevelopment project in 1990 allowing the use of tax-increment funding and making it eligible for federal grants. Real estate plans call for a retail center and other improvements to the area.
